Now that I have got that off my chest I can tell you that I quite like this new limited edition Corum watch. It doesn’t matter to me that it is based on a vintage design, what I care about is that I really like the design. The Grand Precis (precious? precise?) is a 38.5mm wide watch available in 18k red or white gold. The classic looking case has a bit of pizzazz The lines are a nice mixture of straight angles and nice curves. I particularly like how the lugs angle inwards. The dial is a triumph of design goodness from days long past. You know what seals the deal for me? The cross-hairs, those totally make the dial.

The dial is vertically brushed and done in a champagne color. The light texture is welcome and I love the bare bones subsidiary seconds dial. Hands are dauphine and not too short. They not only go with the dial nicely and offer excellent legibility, but fit with the theme nicely. Just a great design (from the past).







Another element I really like is the movement. It is the Corum CO162 manually wound caliber. It isn’t anything super special from a complication standpoint, but I love the design of the bridges. It is isn’t exactly modern, but more 1960’s futuristic – which is a nice departure from the same movement style and decoration we see all the time.

For those who want a nice classic piece with some tradition and a particularly smooth design, the Corum Grand Precis is a nice rare find. Corum will offer 100 pieces in 18k red gold and 50 pieces in 18k white gold. Look for them a bit later this year.

Seiko’s Grand Seiko SBGA011 Spring Drive “Snowflake” – The epitome of a classic dress watch, A Review (and Videos)

My love affair with Seiko’s top-end line, Grand Seiko continues. This time I was able to grab a classic Grand Seiko, the “Snowflake” with the reference SBGA011. Like a lot of my watch purchases, it was not planned. I happened to drop in one of my favorite shop to ask about something else when my trusted salesperson informed me a consignment of two Snowflakes to his shop. Within 24 hours I decided to get one.


All Grand Seikos are made at the Shinshu Watch Studio and located in the city of Shiojiri, neighboring Suwa and Lake Suwa in a mountainous region of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. This location is almost the center of the country where the weather is slightly different from the typical coastal areas of Japan. Here, the humidity level is lower which causes winter snow fall to be very light and airy. This allows the wind to sculpt the snow into beautiful patterns not seen elsewhere in Japan.

In recognition of the locality that supported the studio’s operations, the designers and artisans of the Shinshu Watch Studio decided to create a dial which resembled this light snow fall pattern. Hence, the SBGA011 Grand Seiko Snowflake was born. It uses a unique 6 step process to replicate the snowfall in the dial. While the most complex dial in the Grand Seiko line takes 12 steps to complete, this Snowflake still counts as one of the most intricate dials in the family. Moreover, using titanium to make it as light as a snowflake, and blue accents to contribute a cold feel reinforces the Snowflake theme.

Neil Armstrong and the Omega Speedmaster

Many watch manufacturers boast about how deep underwater their timepieces will work as well as giving claims as to the atmospheric pressure they can withstand. How often are these facts and figures actually tested in a real-world scenario, though? One watch which has been tested to its limits is the Omega Speedmaster.

The late Neil Armstrong is known to the world as the first man to have walked on the moon on 20 July 1969. What many don’t know, however, is that Armstrong and his fellow astronaut on the Apollo 11 mission, Buzz Aldrin, were both wearing their Omega Speedmasters during the mission. The Speedmaster is the only watch to have been approved by NASA or EVH for extra-vehicular activities. In other words, the confidence in this watch was so high that even NASA said it would work on the moon.

It’s not just a theoretical claim, though. Buzz Aldrin actually wrote in his 1973 book, Return to Earth, that he did indeed wear his Omega Speedmaster on the surface of the moon. Prior to being used on the Apollo 11 mission, the watches underwent a barrage of testing at NASA. These tests included simmering the watches in boiling water for a number of hours then immediately freezing them at -18c. They then steeped the watches in pure oxygen for 48 hours, took hammers to them and put them through compression and decompression chambers. They subjected them to immensely high speeds and vibrations and carried out a number of extreme tests on the Speedmaster and a number of other watches. The allowed deviation of accuracy during the tests was five seconds per day. The only watch to beat this was the Omega Speedmaster.

Even today, the Omega Speedmaster is the choice of astronauts the world over. In fact, the watch can handle pressure more than five times that experienced in space. Before heading to the moon, the Omega Speedmaster was used by Gus Grissom and John Young on Gemini 3 on 23 March 1965, as did Ed White during the first American Space Walk. Having been produced by Omega since 1957, the watch is still being manufactured today, with the modern line including a number of other models, such as analog-digital and automatic mechanical variations of the watch. A number of limited edition versions of the watch have also been launched, with sales remaining impressive throughout.

The technology of the watch is what allows it to survive under such extreme conditions. A clamp ring is attached to the glass of the Speedmaster, as the internal pressure of the watch must always remain constant. If it does not, the lubricating oil can leak, which means the moving parts will no longer work properly and the glass could be obscured, rendering the watch unworkable. If a vacuum were to develop inside the watch, it would not run at the same speed due to the balance wheel not working effectively under vacuum conditions. In addition, the glass of the watch has to be thick enough and have enough elasticity to withstand huge temperature differences in space. To cut a long story short, the margin for error is incredibly small, which just goes to show the engineering ingenuity which has gone into designing the Omega Speedmaster.

The accuracy of the Omega Speedmaster is absolutely vital. When an astronaut exits his space module, his oxygen supply begins to deplete. This happens at a steady rate, and can only be measured using time. For this reason, it is vital that his watch is incredibly accurate in space so he knows how long his oxygen supply will last. The Omega Speedmaster really is the difference between life and death.
